Introducing “Equilibre” Collection by Donna Bernstein

Passion, motion, and personality are all ways to describe the art of Donna Bernstein. Her work is featured in several places across New York and Kentucky.

“I combine a passion for the anatomical horse with a love both of classic gestural drawing and the element of surprise. There is more to a horse than just a ‘picture’ of him; there is a mythology, a symbolism; an ancient connection we can trace. Horses express “big energy”, and that is what I love to paint.”

Equestrianstylist.com had the amazing opportunity to interview Donna Bernstein in efforts to find out what inspires her as an equine artist and how the collection has evolved over the years from painting to luxury jewelry.

Q: In reading your bio, I see you grew up with a natural inclination for horses. How has the racing or showjumping events influenced your artwork?

DB: In truth, the horse events reinforce my work. I do not live around horses on a personal basis, so seeing them in action reminds me of why I do what I do. I am inspired by them as a force of nature. Through their body and form they share who they are with us, and in my art I share how I feel about that with the world. From ancient times to the present the horse has been with us, with his kind eye, his noble demeanor, his ability to inspire. When I am with him I am invigorated.

Q: In creating Equilibre, where did you find your inspiration? Did it come from your paintings previously?

DB: The image for Equilibre came directly from my art, and a drawing I created for that purpose. I wanted the simple, elegant head of the horse in perfect balance. In this piece, soft features and a crested neck capture a moment in time in the movement of a horse. And it came to me that this equine embodiment of balance is a lesson for us all, in all areas of our lives. The classic horse expresses it so well.

Q: Does “Silver Charm” have anything to do with the stallion?

DB: I am involved in supporting Old Friends Equine in Georgetown KY. It is a wonderful retirement facility for Thoroughbreds, and each year I attend an event called Ferdinand’s Ball in Louisville two days before the Derby. There I create a painting at the event which is auctioned with all proceeds going to Old Friends. The real Silver Charm lives there, and I did meet and visit him last year. This piece is my solid silver piece, and the name seemed a natural to honor him and horses like him who have done so much to bring great joy to horse racing lovers. He is an icon in the sport, and next year there will be a promotion where a portion of the proceeds of this piece will support his home.
