Julie Browning Bova Launches A Fabulous Equestrian Gift Collection

One of our favorite interior designers, Julie Browning Bova, has just launched a new partnership with Boatman Geller for a fine paper and gifts collection.  We are excited to see the line in person.  Boatman Geller will use Bova’s trademarks equestrian-influenced designs and her love for floras as an inspiration for the new collection that will be available in June 2012.

The signature horse bit designed serving trays, equestrian plaid plates, and jewel tone floral ice bucket will sure be some of the best home accessories to throw a derby or equestrian party.

Exquisite Equestrian Serving Boards Made by Soundview Millworks

I’d like to share with you my favorite new kitchen accessory: The Soundview Millworks Equestrian Horse Bit Serving Board.

Now, Soundview Millworks seriously has the biggest passion and fire behind it.. his name is Grant Tankoos: the founder of Soundview Millworks.  Recently, I spoke with Grant on the background behind these classic kitchen accessories.  It truly was an honor to speak to this inspiring entrepreneur…

One of my favorite quotes from our conversation:  ”Whatever you are doing.  Live It” –  as Grant explained- this is the magic behind Soundview Millworks.

Here’s A little bit of background on Grant:  After working with Vineyard Vines (ps: one of my favorite stores) for 6 years, he was able to learn the ropes of a creative and extremely energized company.  By cultivating that same culture, he founded Soundview Millworks in 2008 with a childhood friend.  Originally, Grant started making these cutting boards and cheese plates strictly based on the nautical lifestyle– This is his true passion: He’s still involved in many sailing events today.

So, how did Soundview Millworks go from being a nautical brand to the equestrian influence?

It turns out, Grant had some family and friends that grew up horseback riding and were always around horses.  He loved creating nautical boards that inspired him and his lifestyle, but he also wanted to create for his friends.  Grant wanted something to appeal to his friends in the horse community and what they were passionate about: Horses, of course.

I told Grant, “If it has anything to do with horses, it’s mine…(us horse people are all the same)”

Some Fun Facts about the boards:  They are all Handmade in the USA! Recently, Soundview Millworks has been able to supply the horse bit boards as trophies to many horse shows and events.  About 90% of the boards are personalized or have some form of customization.  These boards have been featured in many publications such as Yachting Magazine, Cooking Light, Vineyard Vines Catalog, At Home magazine, and more.

Featured here is The Single Stripe Mahogany Accent Double Bit Appetizer Board: I must say: I’m absolutely in love with the brand and the product.  It’s great for serving cheese, crackers, fresh fruit, or any fun appetizer.  These equestrian bit boards are a conversation piece for your next party or equestrian affair.  If you are going to a party, this makes a fantastic gift for the host.

If you have a favorite equestrian discipline, horse breed, or even photo image of you and your horse, you can get your board personalized and engraved.  As you can see, I requested to have the Equestrian Stylist horse head logo in the center.

Here are a few other equestrian cheese plates and cutting boards from Soundview Millworks:

The Kentucky Derby is almost here, so if you are attending an event or starting to plan your party, be sure you get a board.  To purchase one of these exquisite kitchen accessories go to: http://www.soundviewmillworks.com

A Collection of Equestrian Home Inspirations

Thinking about redesigning your home?  Well, my family is moving to Ocala, so I am influencing them with some equestrian interior design inspirations found from different sources over the internet.  I am just in love with so many ideas like ribbons in frames, saddles and houndstooth covered and leather trimmed chairs.  Fresh light colors and stripes are in style for Spring.  I like seeing contrast with different colors of wood symbolizing a barn style.  The horse art piece is broken into threes: to inspire your home, try this with your own horse images to make it customized to your home.

It’s “Toile” About You (And Your Home)

Picture this…You are awakened by a fresh breeze from the Versailles countryside, fragrant lilacs are in the air. The tuscan sun is beckoning you to wake up and start the day. This might be a dream to most of us, however, we don’t have to jet off to France to get a little taste of it right here in our own home. Toile (pronounced twal) fabric has been around ever since the 18th century when it was first produced in France. Since then, it has taken on many styles and shapes, including that of equestrian themed toile.
I thought I might put a little spin on this idea and focus this post strictly on home decor. After all, this is where we spend most of our waking hours (especially during our down time on the weekends), so what better way to bring this style into our home but by showcasing a few SIMPLE, yet decadent ways to incorporate the essence of France, without the hefty price tag of a plane ticket to and fro.

First off, I want to suggest a simple way to bring that “wow” factor into one of the most sacred places in our home: the bedroom. Whether it be equestrian fabric used in drapes, shower curtains, wallpaper, or a duvet cover, the possibilities truly are endless. Below are some sure fire examples to completely change the ambience of your bedroom into that of an equestrian lover’s dream.

Images taken from “My Grandmothers Lace.”  Stay tuned for more spotlights on how to incorporate equestrian toile into other rooms in your house!

Equestrian Stylist and Julie Bova Design Interview

Equestrian Stylist.com is featuring designer Julie Bova: a woman with equestrian style influencing her interior design.  After speaking with Julie initially on Twitter, (social media is just awesome these days, isn’t it?) we spoke on the phone a few days later, and had a blast discussing style and horses.  Julie Bova provides the proof in her designs on how horses and equestrians inspire her creations.

Julie Browning Bova

E.S: So, Julie, tell me about your background in Interior Design:

JB:My father was a very creative man. I began working and playing at his architectural firm at a very young age. I started working when I was 14 or so … I was forever teased about my time working the phones, and I was quickly moved to the print room and the archives to file.

I was inspired and fell in love with architecture and interior design. The incredible talent around me was amazing and their kindness and ability to teach allowed me to grow and develop.  While working in that environment, I was exposed to every aspect of design.  Being very visual, I loved touring Architectural buildings, studying art history, graphic Arts and fashion.

E.S: What influences your style?

JB: My parents encouraged the creative process in everything we did as a family. Projects, entertaining, sports, play and travels made up my childhood. Brainstorming at the kitchen table was common and the projects were always awe-inspiring. Looking back as an adult I clearly see and know where my love of architecture, urban planning and landscape came from.

Fashion plays a huge part as well …I fell in love: Especially with the unforgettable classic bright floral scarves the iconic horse bit detail of the Gucci brand.  Like all little girls, I loved the idea of a horse, but spent my days on ice-skates.

E.S: How long have you been involved with “Equestrian Style”?

JB: As a grown up I purchased a home in horse country and started lessons which were quickly shared by my oldest daughter, Madeline. And now  years later I say we have a family horse and an ” Equestrian lifestyle “.  As a graduate of Indiana University, I am proud to say I have been actively working in the interior design profession for two decades.

E.S: What is important to you as an interior designer?

JB: I love the process. It doesn’t really matter what type of design project I enjoy working with clients, vendors and problem solving. I really never have a bad day in the design studio! I love every aspect of our creative process- from construction to planning it excites me everyday to come to the studio and face the daily challenges.

I love assisting clients in finding that item that really gives them goosebumps! We love horses, right!! We walk up an see that thoroughbred, and it is all over! Well much like a beautiful chair, unique piece of art or an antique quilt…

I try to find that something that people are passionate about. Being a good listener, and working the space and or color direction around that collection or item helps as me in design.  Connecting with the client and making sure there is a connection is important.  I love everything in my home and I really believe this is an important ingredient when the client hands over the interior reins!

ES: Have you ever thought about interior barn designing?

JB: I love the idea of designing a stable and I would be on the first flight out!!  I keep the Stables book right near my desk! Always inspired..

ES: What is your favorite part about interior design for equestrians?

JB: I feel that horse people are very passionate about their lifestyle. Something very comfortable, elegant and warm. Classic “hunt style” to me is warm and layered with natural woods, rich patina and always somehow embraces the outdoors.  I actually have never walked into a home of a fellow equestrian that I didn’t covet their collection of horse treasures and heirlooms. I just love the mix of easy living and equestrian influence in china, wool rugs or a pair of vintage riding boots.

Julie Bova Home Collection: Ottoman with bit details

ES: Leather and horse bits never go out of style!

ES: What trends do you see going forward for the next year?

JB: I m excited about the return of the brilliant colors in textiles!  I really think there is a pattern textile that is in the world that defines everyone.  I love that unexpected pop of color! It adds a little kick of life in the winter months.

ES: I love the neutral barn-style look with the stall door accent on the left.  The minor equestrian details are elegant and classic.

ES: What are some of your “wish list” items this season?

JB: Pictured below are items on my Holiday Wish List:

Antique Stone Horses from 1st Dibs (via Pat Monroe Antiques)

Dubarry Boots

Wool Plai Blankets from Scottish Weavers

Equestrian Interiors

While visiting Worth Avenue this past weekend, some friends and I stopped in the lovely Hermes Paris store, and Ralph Lauren Flagship store.  I always say, even if you quit riding (the thought kills me..) but, A saddle is a great accessory for a wall in your house.  Hermes dresses their store with saddles and riding accessories coordinated a nice merchandising layout.

These Ralph Lauren home accessories simply state the classic and chic equestrian style.  Leather trimmings on pillows, stirrup accents, horse bit frames, and fox hunting style napkins all make a beautiful compilation.

Barn Style from my Pinterest

Visiting barns is always exciting and can give you ideas on different interior design style.  I have a section of barn style on Pinterest that you can follow here.  I have included a few pictures for your inspiration today.  I love the rustic wedding barn picture below.  Some barns have very unique stall designs too, with wrought iron stall bars and chic accents.  If you are a designer, check out some horse farms to get inspired.  With so much to see and look at, your mind will be overflowing with chic, elegant, and classic ideas!
